When we were children, we were taught this prayer that many of us still know how to recite in full:
Angel of God, my guardian dear
To whom His love, commits me here
Ever this day, be at my side
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
Do you remember?
We’ve heard many stories from friends, neighbors, acquaintances. Stories that make them believe that there are angels all around us. We’ve seen television shows documenting the existence of angels. But, do they really exist?
I’m not going to sway you either way. I will tell you my personal stories where I have experienced things that made me believe that I am surrounded by angels.
As a child, I grew up near the ocean. You can literally walk to the beach in 10 minutes. We lived very close to the water.
In grade school, I became very fond of having an aquarium and having lots of different fish in it. I had black molis, neon fish, angel and gold fish. I took care of that aquarium faithfully and made sure that the decor is nice so that my pets are comfortable in it.
One afternoon, my cousin who’s into the same hobby, stopped by and asked if I wanted to go to the beach and pick up some shells for our aquariums. It was a lazy afternoon and I wasn’t doing anything so I thought it would be cool.
Before we can get to the beach, we have to cross a highway. It was a busy two-way highway. Both my cousin and I have crossed this highway many times so it wasn’t really scary. It was like nothing to us.
As we were crossing the highway, we were in the median waiting for traffic to pass, when suddenly, a car decided to turn towards the street we came from. The problem was that the driver miscalculated the speed of an oncoming car coming towards it. My cousin and I knew that the oncoming car was going to hit it so we both yelled at each other, “Run!” We saw the colliding cars and one of the cars was headed towards us.
At this point, everything turned into slow motion. It’s like watching a movie. I remember taking the direction different than that of my cousin. I ran as fast as I could and so did he. When I looked back, I saw my cousin as he tripped on his slippers and fell. The car was reeling towards him. Thank God, the median broke the momentum of the car and it stopped short of hitting my cousin. The car was only a few inches away from him and it it fell, the tire hit his foot.
I was horrified and I didn’t know what to do. People started surrounding us and checking if both of us were okay. One person advised my cousin not to move and to stay put until the police got there. In the meantime, I told them to keep an eye on my cousin as I ran home and told my aunt of the incident. It ended up that my cousin only suffered minor scratches and a sprained ankle from the weight of the tire. Other than that, we were okay.
So, where did the angels play a role in this story? I would say that the direction I took when I ran was directed by an angel. The distance that I traveled was so far from the accident that I may even believe that I was carried by one. My cousin on the other hand was protected by an invisible being who stopped the car short from hitting him.
You can call it coincidence. You can call it chance. But, I believe that angels were watching over us – that day and every day.
Have you ever experienced anything like this? Do leave us your story in the comments section below. (And yes, I believe that angels don’t discriminate. You can be gay, straight, black, white, yellow, transgender…. angels protect us everyday.)
